North 24 Paragnas, 20 December (H.S.): A major political change has taken place in Bongaon Municipality of West Bengal. On Saturday, Dilip Majumdar was elected as the new chairman, while Jyotsna Adhya was appointed as the vice-chairman. The election was held in the presence of all 20 councillors. Vice-Chairman Jyotsna Adhya said that her main objective would be to provide better civic services to the people of Bongaon and to accelerate the overall development of the city.
On the same day, Riturparna Adhya and Chiranjit Biswas, councillors from Ward No. 17 and 18 respectively, announced their joining the Trinamool Congress.
As per information, nine Trinamool Congress councillors had brought a no-confidence motion against the former chairman, Gopal Seth.
On the morning of the no-confidence vote, Gopal Seth resigned from his post. Following this, the election for the new chairman and vice-chairman was held on Saturday. The municipal executive officer stated that the new chairman was elected in the presence of 20 councillors.
There was widespread discontent among the people due to the inadequate supply of civic services and long-standing problems like water scarcity. This discontent was also highlighted in a survey report related to the Trinamool Congress's election strategy a few months ago. Furthermore, the Trinamool Congress's defeat in all 22 wards of the Bongaon Municipality in the recent Lok Sabha elections also contributed to the situation. It was for these reasons that the party decided to bring about a change in leadership in the Bongaon Municipality.
The state leadership of the Trinamool Congress had instructed Chairman Gopal Seth to resign from his post, but he did not comply with the party's instructions and refused to resign. In the meantime, he had also removed Vice-Chairman Jyotsna Adhya from her position.
Following this, the Trinamool Congress of the Bongaon organizational district issued a show-cause notice to Gopal Seth. The notice asked him to explain his defiance of the party's instructions and gave him seven days to resign. Despite this, Gopal Seth remained adamant. Ultimately, a no-confidence motion was passed against him, and the new chairman and vice-chairman were elected on Saturday.
