Guwahati, 17 December (HS). Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has intensified efforts to enhance safety at Level Crossing (LC) gates across its jurisdiction by upgrading signalling systems, adopting modern technologies and ensuring regular maintenance. The initiatives aim to minimise human intervention, improve system reliability and ensure safer interaction between rail and road traffic across the zone.
NF Railway CPRO kapinjal Kishor Sharma informed on Wednesday that as part of its safety-focused approach, NFR has been progressively upgrading interlocked Level Crossing gates, which regulate train and road traffic through secure signalling and interlocking arrangements. At present, there are 624 interlocked LC gates across the zone, of which eight have been commissioned during the current financial year 2025–26, reflecting continued emphasis on operational safety.
To further improve safety for road users, sliding boom arrangements have been installed at 10 LC gates in Katihar, Rangiya and Tinsukia divisions. These sliding booms enhance visibility and provide stronger physical barriers during train movements. So far, a total of 582 sliding booms have been incorporated at LC gates across the NFR zone.
NFR has also made significant progress in replacing conventional Mechanical Lifting Barriers (MLBs) with Electric Lifting Barriers (ELBs), which offer quicker response and higher reliability. A total of 500 ELBs have been commissioned across the zone, including the installation of a new ELB in Rangiya Division. During the current financial year, 14 ELBs have been provided by replacing existing MLBs, reducing dependence on manual operations at sensitive and high-traffic LC locations.
In addition, System Integrity Testing (SIT) has been conducted at 220 LC gates across various divisions to ensure fail-safe performance of signalling and interlocking systems. Signalling cable meggering has also been carried out at 32 LC gates to detect electrical faults at an early stage and maintain the health of critical infrastructure.
Through these sustained measures, Northeast Frontier Railway has reiterated its commitment to strengthening safety standards, working continuously towards safer train operations and enhanced protection for passengers and the general public at level crossing gates across the region.----------
