Chennai, 17 December (H.S.) : In a commendable display of ingenuity and compassion, a car mechanic in Chennai has developed hand-operated modifications that enable individuals with lower limb disabilities to drive safely and independently.
Murugavel, an experienced driver with nearly two decades behind the wheel, lost mobility in his right leg following an accident. For two years, this impairment stripped him of his ability to drive, significantly impacting his confidence and autonomy.
However, through the innovative solutions provided by Senthil, a mechanic based in Ashok Nagar, Chennai, Murugavel has regained control of his vehicle and his life.
Senthil's modifications include a hand-controlled system resembling a motorcycle handlebar, mounted near the steering wheel. This mechanism allows the driver to operate both the accelerator and brake using a single hand, eliminating the need for foot pedals.
For individuals with left leg impairments, a sensor-based knob near the gear lever facilitates semi-automatic clutch operation. Additional adaptations for those with upper limb challenges involve sensor controls on the steering wheel for functions such as lights and wipers, primarily in automatic transmission vehicles.
These changes do not alter the vehicle's structural integrity but add compliant assistive features approved by the Motor Vehicles Department. Following inspection, modified vehicles qualify for official driving licenses.
The inspiration for Senthil's work stemmed from a friend's son who faced similar challenges after an accident. As Senthil explained, One of my friend’s sons met with an accident and struggled to drive. That inspired me to think of solutions that could give people their independence back.
He emphasized the regulatory compliance: We do not alter the structure of the vehicle. We only add assistive facilities for PwDs, which are approved by officials of the Motor Vehicles Department.
Murugavel expressed profound gratitude: Finding this alternative way to drive on my own brought back my confidence. I feel like I have regained a part of my life.
The impact extends beyond Murugavel, with increasing numbers of persons with disabilities seeking these modifications. Even individuals without disabilities but experiencing chronic conditions such as disc problems or knee pain are adopting the technology for greater comfort.
This initiative highlights the potential of localized innovation to address accessibility challenges, empowering individuals to reclaim mobility and independence on India's roads.
