Dibrugarh (Assam), 17 December (HS): Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday reiterated the state government’s commitment to women-led self-reliance, stating that efforts are being continuously made to move beyond the mindset of viewing women merely as homemakers and instead include them as equal partners in Assam’s journey towards economic independence.
Under the Mukhyamantri Mahila Udyamita Abhiyan (MMUA), the Chief Minister formally launched the distribution of cheques worth ₹10,000 each as initial capital to 23,791 self-help group (SHG) members of the Tingkhang Assembly constituency. Dr Sarma expressed hope that the financial assistance would enable women to take leadership roles in society and play a significant part in accelerating Assam’s economy, in line with the government’s target of creating 40 lakh ‘Lakhpati Baideos’ across the state.
Highlighting the enthusiasm among beneficiaries, the Chief Minister said the confidence and determination reflected in the women’s participation underscored the success of the initiative, similar to the response witnessed earlier in Barpeta.
On the same occasion, Dr Sarma also underscored the government’s firm resolve towards holistic development of Dibrugarh district. He inaugurated the Abhaypur Rural Sports Complex at Moran, constructed at a cost of over ₹12 crore, aimed at promoting rural sports and youth engagement.
Additionally, he laid the foundation stone for multiple infrastructure projects, including the upgradation and widening of the 9.3-km Moran–Nitai road under Assam Mala 3.0 at a cost exceeding ₹36 crore, the Tingkhang Sub-Divisional Commissioner’s office building with an estimated cost of over ₹19 crore and the new Moran Police Station building under the Maitri Scheme with a project cost of more than ₹2 crore.
The Chief Minister stated that these initiatives reflect the government’s unwavering development momentum, focusing simultaneously on women empowerment, infrastructure, governance and policing to ensure inclusive growth across the region.
