Kolkata, 17 December (H.S.) :

A court in Barrackpore on Wednesday sentenced three persons to life imprisonment in connection with the murder of Trinamool Congress councillor Anupam Dutta.

Earlier on Monday, the court had held the three accused guilty in the case. Barrackpore’s Third Additional District and Sessions Court judge Ayan Kumar Bandyopadhyay pronounced the sentence, awarding life imprisonment to Amit Pandit, Sanjib Pandit and Jiarul Mandal.

Anupam Dutta was a Trinamool Congress councillor from Ward No. 8 of Panihati Municipality. He was shot dead on March 13, 2022, near his residence on Agarpara Station Road.

According to the prosecution, the assailants arrived on a motorcycle and opened fire at close range, killing the councillor on the spot. Later that night, police arrested one of the accused, Amit Pandit. As the investigation progressed, Sanjib Pandit and Jiarul Mandal were also arrested, following which the trial began.

After prolonged hearings and examination of witnesses, the court found all three guilty of murder and awarded them life imprisonment. The case had drawn significant attention, raising concerns over law and order and political violence in the state.
