Kolkata, 11 December (H.S.) :
A Below Poverty Line (BPL) household in Dayikundu village under Chandrakona-II block of West Midnapore district has been left stunned after receiving an electricity bill of ₹2.83 lakh, triggering widespread discussion in the area. The meter installed at the residence of Golam Navi Khan falls under the BPL category, yet an extraordinarily high bill was issued. Earlier too, the family had reportedly received a bill exceeding ₹1 lakh. The incident has once again raised questions over the functioning of the West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (WBSEDCL).
According to information received on Thursday morning, the family earns its livelihood through daily wage labour. When they previously received a bill of ₹1.83 lakh, they lodged a complaint, but no resolution followed. The latest bill, which is ₹1 lakh higher than the previous one, has caused severe anxiety within the household.
Local residents have alleged that the bill appears fraudulent, pointing out that Golam Navi Khan spends most of his time at his daughter’s home, while his own house remains in a dilapidated condition. Villagers believe such high electricity consumption is impossible.
Meanwhile, the power department has maintained that as per their records, no bill payments have been made since 2010. Officials stated that the entire matter will be investigated, including meter status, outstanding dues and the newly generated bill. A detailed report will be prepared after verification.
Villagers have demanded that the BPL consumer be given relief and that a revised bill reflecting actual power usage be issued. The family has appealed to the administration for intervention, claiming that it is impossible for them to pay such an exorbitant amount.
