Kolkata, 10 December (H.S.) :
A loud explosion in a garbage pile triggered panic in Chaurahat Market of Dinhata on Wednesday morning, causing chaos among shopkeepers and local residents.
According to eyewitnesses, traders in the cloth market area had set fire to a heap of garbage when a sudden blast occurred, shaking the entire locality. People rushed out of their shops in fear, mistaking it for a major explosion.
Local businessman said, “We heard a loud bang and everyone panicked. Later we realised the blast came from the burning garbage pile.”
Fortunately, no casualties or injuries were reported in the incident. Police from Dinhata Police Station, led by town officer Ashraf Ali, soon reached the spot to investigate.
Preliminary investigation suggests that firecrackers or explosive materials might have been dumped in the garbage, which ignited and caused the explosion. However, police have not ruled out other possibilities and are conducting a detailed probe into the matter.
