India Wins ISSA Award 2025 for Outstanding Social Security Achievements

Delhi, 3 October (H.S.): India has been conferred with the prestigious International Social Security Association (ISSA) Award 2025 for its remarkable progress in expanding social protection systems, a recognition that underscores the nation's commitment to inclusive welfare under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership.

Advancements in Social Protection Coverage

India's social security coverage has expanded from 19% in 2015 to an impressive 64.3% in 2025, now reaching over 940 million citizens, a milestone acknowledged by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) . The award highlights the government's success in drastically broadening welfare schemes, including digital platforms like the e-Shram portal, which registers over 310 million unorganised workers to facilitate social benefits.

Strategic Use of Technology and Digital Infrastructure

Union Labour Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya emphasized India’s innovative use of technology to deliver welfare efficiently, mentioning the integrated digital tools of the e-Shram portal and the National Career Service (NCS), both improving employment opportunities and social security access. He also noted that India’s digital progress has significantly contributed to the country securing the highest vote share in the ISSA General Assembly, with 30 seats— the most for any nation .

Significance of the Award and Future Outlook

The recognition was awarded during the World Social Security Forum in Kuala Lumpur, attended by over 1,200 global policymakers. Dr. Mandaviya attributed India’s success to PM Modi’s vision of Antyodaya, aiming to empower the last person in the social hierarchy. The ISSA accolade marks India as a leader in global social protection initiatives, reflecting its holistic approach that integrates financial inclusion, skill development, and digital innovation to forge a resilient social safety net.
