Kathmandu, 25 August (H.S.):

Former Nepali Congress president Sher Bahadur Deuba has approached the Supreme Court seeking a stay on the party’s general convention convened at the initiative of incumbent president Gagan Thapa. Separate supplementary petitions filed by Deuba and former acting president Purna Bahadur Khadka have been registered with the Supreme Court in this connection.

Nepali Congress leader Deepak Khadka, acting as Deuba’s authorised representative, and advocate Shravan Kumar, representing Khadka, submitted the supplementary petitions on Tuesday, seeking an immediate halt to the general convention process. Supreme Court spokesperson Arjun Prasad Koirala confirmed that the petitions had been registered.

According to Koirala, a date has been fixed for the hearing of the writ petitions. The petitions filed by Deuba and Khadka have sought an immediate suspension of the process for the special general convention.

The Supreme Court has already allowed the case concerning the dispute over the Nepali Congress’s official status and the updating of its leadership details to proceed for hearing from the outset.
