Dhaka, 18 August (H.S.): An official held responsible in an old Bangladesh Public Service Commission (BPSC) examination paper leak case has been sent to jail. BPSC programmer Kaushik Debnath surrendered before a Dhaka court on Monday, following which the court ordered that he be sent to custody.
According to a report by the Dhaka Tribune, Kaushik surrendered before Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md Shahjahan Kabir and sought bail. His lawyer, Advocate Md Shariful Islam, argued that the allegations levelled against his client in the First Information Report (FIR) and charge sheet were entirely false and fabricated. After hearing the arguments, the court rejected the bail petition and ordered that Kaushik be sent to jail.
Kaushik had secured six weeks’ bail from the High Court on July 7 and had been directed to surrender before the trial court. He complied with the order and surrendered on Monday.
CID Sub-Inspector Nippon Chandra Chanda filed the case at Paltan Model Police Station on July 8, 2024, under the Bangladesh Public Service Commission Act. The case initially named 31 individuals, while allegations were also brought against 50-60 unidentified persons.
Following its investigation, CID Additional Superintendent Suman Kumar Saha submitted a charge sheet against 55 people on May 18. The charge sheet also named Abed Ali, who was allegedly the mastermind of the question-paper leak syndicate.
According to the charge sheet, the syndicate provided selected candidates with examination questions and answers before the test. The group allegedly collected substantial sums of money from candidates in advance.
The investigation further found that the network operated across several districts.
