Howrah, 16 August (H.S.): The Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST), Shibpur, on Sunday formally inaugurated its state-of-the-art boys’ hostel, Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee Hall, on the institute campus.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Union Minister of State for Education and Minister of State for Development of North Eastern Region, Dr Sukanta Majumdar, as the Chief Guest. Chairperson of the IIEST Shibpur Board of Governors Tejaswini AnanthKumar, Director Prof. V. M. S. R. Murthy, along with senior officials, faculty members, staff and students were also present.

The newly commissioned G+10 residential complex has a capacity of 1,160 students and will accommodate male students from the ongoing academic semester. The facility includes modern residential amenities along with a dedicated auxiliary block housing a dining facility, indoor recreation areas and guest rooms.

The hostel has also been designed with a focus on sustainable infrastructure. It incorporates rooftop solar energy generation and an advanced wastewater recycling plant, in line with the institute’s green campus initiatives.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof. V. M. S. R. Murthy said the inauguration of Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee Hall marks an important step in strengthening the institute’s campus infrastructure and improving the quality of student life.

He said that with the expansion of the institute’s academic and research activities, providing modern, inclusive and environmentally sustainable residential facilities for students and scholars remains a key priority.

Ceremony Begins with Vande Mataram

The inaugural programme commenced at around 1:30 PM with the arrival of the dignitaries, followed by the formal unveiling of the hostel and a floral tribute to Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee.

The official session at the Institute Hall began with Vande Mataram and an invocation song, followed by the welcome address by Director Prof. V. M. S. R. Murthy.

Tejaswini AnanthKumar addressed the gathering, followed by the keynote address by Chief Guest Dr Sukanta Majumdar, who appreciated the institute’s growth and expansion of its campus infrastructure.

Special Cover Released to Mark 170 Years of IIEST

A special cover bearing a Special Cancellation Stamp was also released during the ceremony by Riju Ganguly, Post Master General, Department of Posts, Government of India, commemorating IIEST Shibpur’s 170 years of contribution to technical education and national development.

Following the felicitation of the dignitaries, IIEST Shibpur Registrar CA Biswajit Bhattacharyya delivered the vote of thanks. The programme concluded with the National Anthem.

A media interaction was subsequently held at around 2:50 PM.

The event was organised as part of the institute’s continuing efforts to strengthen campus infrastructure and provide improved residential facilities to its growing student community.
