New Delhi, August 12 (HS): Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran on Wednesday announced that he will not offer himself for reappointment when his current term ends on February 20, 2027, and urged the Tata Sons Board to decide on his successor soon to ensure a smooth transition.

In a statement, Chandrasekaran said he had completed 40 years of professional life at the Tata Group and described the opportunity to contribute to the group as immensely satisfying.

Leading Tata Sons over the past decade has been a great honour and a profound responsibility, he said.

Chandrasekaran said his current tenure as Chairman of Tata Sons is due to end on February 20, 2027.

According to him, the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and Sir Ratan Tata Trust had unanimously resolved and recommended extending his next term by five years. The proposal was subsequently recorded and recommended by the Tata Sons Nomination and Remuneration Committee and the Board.

However, the proposal was tabled before the Tata Sons Board on February 24, 2026, but was not carried through because one Board member did not support it.

In the absence of unanimous support, I chose to defer the decision, Chandrasekaran said.

He said six months had passed since that Board meeting and no resolution had been reached.

Chandrasekaran said the need for clarity on the group's future leadership had become important as Tata Sons has several strategic projects at critical stages of execution.

It is not only necessary to have a leader in place to lead the Group beyond Feb 2027, but also clarity on leadership is important for employees, investors, partners and other stakeholders, he said.

Against this backdrop, Chandrasekaran said he had communicated to the Tata Sons Board earlier on Wednesday that he had decided not to seek reappointment when his current term ends.

He has also asked the Board to take a decision on the succession soon so that there can be a proper transition.

Chandrasekaran expressed gratitude to the stakeholders for their support.

His decision sets the stage for the Tata Sons Board to begin the process of determining the group's leadership beyond February 2027, with succession clarity becoming a priority ahead of the end of his current tenure.
