Hooghly, 12 August (H.S.): Saptagram MLA Swaraj Ghosh has taken a firm stand against encroachment of drains and the persistent waterlogging problem in several areas of the constituency. He has given encroachers four to five days to clear the drains, warning that the administration will take action if the encroachments are not removed within the stipulated time.

Residents of Chak Bansberia, No. 3 Gumti, Nimtala, Barapara and several other areas under Saptagram Gram Panchayat have been facing waterlogging for a long time. Locals said that for nearly half the year, residents are forced to wade through water, with many having to use gumboots for commuting. Schoolchildren, patients and pregnant women are among those facing serious difficulties.

Residents said they had repeatedly approached the panchayat administration and other authorities with their complaints, but the problem remained unresolved for years.

The matter was also brought to the attention of MLA Swaraj Ghosh. The MLA held several meetings with the panchayat pradhan, deputy pradhan and officials and directed them to resolve the issue. However, with little improvement on the ground, residents expressed their anger during a Janata Darbar organised in the area. Several residents became emotional and broke down while narrating their difficulties before the MLA.

Ghosh also expressed his displeasure over the absence of the pradhan and deputy pradhan. He said, “If you cannot provide services to the people, leave your chair. Otherwise, solve their problems.”

A large number of people from the minority community also attended the Janata Darbar. Addressing them, the MLA said, “I know you did not vote for the BJP. But there is no reason to worry. Every eligible person will receive the benefits of all schemes of the Central and state governments. I am the MLA of every person—of those who voted for me and also of those who did not.”

The MLA also issued a strong warning against alleged mafia activities and criminal elements in the area. Referring to rumours that a “setting” had been reached, Ghosh said, “As long as Swaraj is here, mafia rule and hooliganism will not be allowed in the area. Those involved in illegal activities will have to go into custody.”
