New Delhi, 12 August (H.S.):

Indian Railways has approved the installation of Kavach version 4.0 across 660 route kilometres of the Izzatnagar Division of North Eastern Railway at an estimated cost of Rs 295 crore.

According to the Ministry of Railways, the project has been approved as part of a comprehensive plan to extend Kavach across the remaining railway network, along with a Long-Term Evolution (LTE)-based communication network.

Kavach is an indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system designed to prevent incidents such as Signal Passing At Danger (SPAD) and train collisions. The system continuously monitors train movements and can automatically apply brakes when required.

According to the Railways, Kavach enables trains to operate safely at the maximum permissible speed while improving operational reliability. It also supports safer train operations during adverse weather conditions, including dense fog.

Under the approved project, the remaining railway sections of the Izzatnagar Division will be equipped with Kavach 4.0. The Railways said the deployment will further strengthen the safety infrastructure across the identified sections.

The installation of the advanced train protection system is part of Indian Railways’ broader efforts to enhance rail safety through indigenous technology and modern communication infrastructure.
