New Delhi, 10 August (H.S.): Union Minister for Coal and Mines G. Kishan Reddy on Monday introduced the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026, in the Lok Sabha amid uproar in the House. The proceedings were subsequently adjourned until 2 pm.

While introducing the Bill, Reddy said the proposed legislation seeks to further amend the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 1957.

The primary objective of the Bill is to promote the exploration of critical minerals in the country, facilitate investment in the mining sector and strengthen India’s mineral security.

The proposed legislation also contains provisions empowering the Central Government to frame rules for states under which taxes, cesses or other levies may be imposed on mining rights and mineral-bearing lands.

The introduction of the Bill comes as the government seeks to strengthen the policy framework governing the exploration and development of critical mineral resources, which are considered important for emerging technologies, clean energy and strategic industries.

Following the introduction of the legislation amid continued disruptions in the House, the Lok Sabha was adjourned until 2 pm.
