The port recorded its highest-ever single-day container handling and posted strong growth in the first quarter of the current financial year.

According to the port administration, the Kolkata Dock System (KDS) handled 3,186 TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units) on July 6, 2026, setting a new all-time single-day record. The achievement surpassed the previous record of 3,081 TEUs, which was established on June 12, 2026.

The port also registered robust performance during the first quarter (April–June 2026) of the financial year. It handled 253,945 TEUs, compared to 234,272 TEUs during the corresponding period of the previous financial year, registering a year-on-year growth of 8.40 per cent in container traffic.

SMP Kolkata Chairman Rathendra Raman said the milestones reflect the port's continued focus on operational excellence, infrastructure modernisation and customer-centric service delivery. He expressed confidence that the ongoing modernisation initiatives and improvements in cargo handling systems would enable the port to achieve even higher benchmarks in the coming years.

The Chairman congratulated all trade partners, officers, employees and labour unions for the record-breaking performance. He dedicated the achievement to the vision of Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee, stating that it is a matter of pride that India's oldest operating major port bears his name.
