New Delhi, 30 July (H.S.): The Central government will develop world-class public toilet facilities at toll plazas on national highways to enhance cleanliness standards and improve passenger convenience.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways stated that the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has prepared a new performance-based framework for the initiative, focusing on hygiene, digital monitoring and passenger-centric maintenance. Under this initiative, existing toilet blocks will be renovated and new facilities will also be constructed. The design of these toilets will be indigenous, sustainable and aligned with green building standards.

The new system will include an Internet of Things (IoT)-based live telemetry system to enable real-time monitoring of maintenance activities. A performance-based payment mechanism will also be implemented to ensure quality services. Passengers will be able to provide their feedback through NHAI’s ‘RajmargYatra’ mobile application.

The newly developed toilet facilities will include barrier-free access for persons with disabilities. Special provisions will be made to ensure the safety and privacy of women. The facilities will also include clean water supply and modern sanitation infrastructure.

NHAI said that the initiative will significantly improve the travel experience of commuters and establish new benchmarks for public amenities across the national highway network.
