Guwahati, 03 July (HS): An 18-year-old girl who was critically injured in a brutal attack in Assam's Nalbari district on May 30 succumbed to her injuries at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) on Friday morning, more than a month after the incident. With her death, the toll in the case has risen to two.

The deceased, identified as Mridumudra Deka, had been undergoing intensive treatment at GMCH since sustaining grievous injuries in the alleged assault at Gangapur under Mukalmua. Despite prolonged medical care, doctors were unable to save her.

It may be mentioned that her 19-year-old brother, Madhurjya Barman, a resident of Balipathar in Chamata and joint general secretary of the West Nalbari Regional Students' Union, was killed in the attack and was declared dead at the scene.

According to police and local sources, the siblings were returning home on a scooter from Nalbari town on the night of May 30 when they were allegedly intercepted and attacked by Roz Ali. The victims were later found lying by the roadside with severe injuries. Mridumudra was initially shifted to a local hospital before being referred to GMCH in critical condition.

The incident had sparked widespread outrage across Nalbari, with local residents, student organisations and civil society groups demanding swift justice. Allegations linking the case to love jihad had also intensified public debate, although the matter remains under police investigation.

The prime accused, Roz Ali, was later killed in a police encounter at Mukalmua. Following Mridumudra's death, demands for a speedy investigation and prosecution of those involved have intensified, while police continue their probe into the case.------------
