SIT formed to investigate attack; security tightened and CCTV footage being examinedChandigarh, 27 July (H.S.): A petrol bomb was allegedly hurled at the Bharatiya Janata Party office in Sangrur, Punjab, during the intervening night of Sunday and Monday, damaging a portion of the building’s wall. Police have constituted a Special Investigation Team to probe the incident and security around the BJP office has been strengthened.Preliminary investigation indicated that the attackers filled petrol in a glass bottle and threw it into the office premises. According to police, the incident occurred between 2:30 am and 3:00 am.Sangrur Superintendent of Police Devendra Attri said police received information on Monday morning about a bottle being thrown at the BJP office. Police teams led by DSP Dalbir Singh and the local Station House Officer immediately reached the spot.Initial findings suggested that the bottle was thrown over the wall of the outdoor garden and landed between two sections of the building. Signs of fire were also found at the spot.The SP said the incident was being investigated from every possible angle and further details could not be disclosed at this stage. He added that a case would be registered and strict action taken against those responsible.Police cordoned off the area and launched a detailed investigation. CCTV footage from the office and surrounding areas is being examined, while forensic and other evidence is also being collected to identify the attackers.Meanwhile, Sangrur BJP leader Randeep Deol said the office caretaker informed him on Monday morning that a fire had broken out on the premises and also sent photographs of the damage. He immediately informed state BJP president Kewal Dhillon, following which the police arrived at the site. Earlier, a grenade attack was also reported at the BJP headquarters in Chandigarh on April 1, 2026.
