New Delhi, 27 July (H.S.): The 22nd Commonwealth Table Tennis Championship commenced at the Thyagaraj Stadium in the national capital on Monday. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Education Minister Ashish Sood attended the inauguration ceremony of the championship, which will continue from July 27 to August 2 with participation from players representing 25 Commonwealth nations.

Addressing the inaugural ceremony, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said that hosting the championship in the national capital is one of the biggest sporting events for Delhi and a matter of pride for the Delhi government. She extended her best wishes to all the players, coaches, officials and everyone associated with the organisation of the tournament, expressing hope for its successful completion.

The Chief Minister said that the Delhi government is continuously strengthening sports infrastructure and remains committed to providing better facilities to athletes. She added that efforts are being made to create an environment that encourages young people and students to participate actively in sports.

Welcoming the players, coaches and delegations from 25 Commonwealth countries, Gupta said that Delhi warmly welcomes all participants and wished them success. She urged the athletes to give their best performances, create memorable moments and carry back pleasant memories of Delhi’s hospitality.

The Chief Minister said that the Thyagaraj Stadium will witness exciting contests until August 2. She added that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Delhi is rapidly moving towards establishing itself as a global sports hub. She also appealed to Delhi residents to be part of the sporting celebration and encourage the participating athletes.

On the occasion, Education Minister Ashish Sood said that it is an honour for Delhi to host players from 25 Commonwealth countries who represent the spirit of sportsmanship, friendship and excellence. He welcomed all the athletes who have travelled thousands of kilometres to participate in the championship.

Sood expressed confidence that the players would not only take back memories of their performances and medals but also unforgettable experiences of India’s hospitality, rich culture and the affection of Delhi residents.
