New Delhi, 25 July (H.S.): A Sessions Court at Delhi's Rouse Avenue Court on Saturday reserved its order on a plea seeking the registration of an FIR over the alleged inclusion of Sonia Gandhi's name in the electoral roll in 1980. Special Judge Vishal Gogne directed that the order will be pronounced on August 13.

The petition was filed by advocate Vikas Tripathi, who has challenged before the Sessions Court the Magistrate Court's order rejecting his request for the registration of an FIR against Sonia Gandhi. On December 9, 2025, the court had issued notices to Sonia Gandhi and the Delhi Police in the matter.

Earlier, on September 11, Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Vaibhav Chaurasia had dismissed the petition. According to the plea, Sonia Gandhi's name was included in the electoral roll in 1980, whereas she became an Indian citizen only in 1983.

The petition states that Sonia Gandhi's name was entered in the electoral roll of the New Delhi Assembly constituency in 1980 despite the fact that she was not an Indian citizen at that time. It further alleges that her name was removed from the electoral roll in 1982 and re-entered in 1983 after she acquired Indian citizenship.

According to the petition, Sonia Gandhi applied for Indian citizenship in April 1983. It alleges that since she became an Indian citizen only in 1983, forged documents must have been submitted to facilitate the inclusion of her name in the electoral roll in 1980, amounting to a cognisable offence. The petitioner has therefore sought directions from the court to order the registration of an FIR against Sonia Gandhi.

The petition further contends that while dismissing the matter, the Magistrate Court neither issued notice to Sonia Gandhi nor sought a response from the Delhi Police before rejecting the plea.
