New Delhi, 24 July (H.S.):
Just 12 hours after making a spectacular appearance at the colourful opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games 2026, the Indian contingent returned its complete focus to its primary objective — preparing for medal-winning performances.
According to a statement issued by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) on Friday evening, Indian athletes, coaches and support staff resumed training, recovery sessions and strategic planning on Friday morning after participating in the opening ceremony held at the OVO Hydro Arena on Thursday night.
While millions of sports fans in India stayed awake late into the night to enjoy the opening ceremony celebrations, for Indian athletes it was only a ceremonial milestone. For them, the real Commonwealth Games campaign began on Friday morning, with preparations intensifying again at hotels, training centres and recovery facilities.
Focus Shifts from Celebrations to Preparation
The hotels where the Indian contingent is staying reflected a sporting atmosphere from early morning. Coaches finalised competition schedules, physiotherapists focused on athletes’ recovery sessions, nutrition experts worked on individual diet plans, and team managers completed arrangements related to upcoming events.
The entire contingent is now focused solely on delivering its best performance.
Glasgow Model Proves Beneficial for Athletes
One of the biggest strengths of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games is its compact format. Unlike several recent multi-sport events, most competitions here are being conducted at existing world-class venues.
This has significantly reduced travel time for athletes, allowing them more time for training, rest and recovery. Experts believe that such arrangements, although they may appear minor, can have a major positive impact on athletes’ performances during long tournaments.
Support Staff Playing Crucial Role
Behind the performance of Indian athletes, doctors, physiotherapists, strength and conditioning experts, team managers and logistics staff are also playing a crucial role.
The entire support team is continuously ensuring that athletes receive every required facility on time during the competition, allowing them to remain fully focused on their sporting performances.
The Indian Olympic Association is also maintaining constant coordination with various national sports federations, coaches and the organising committee to ensure that athletes do not face any administrative or logistical challenges.
Lessons for Ahmedabad 2030
The Glasgow Games are also considered significant for India, as Ahmedabad is proposed to host the Commonwealth Games in 2030.
The use of existing world-class stadiums, improved transportation systems and athlete-centric planning at Glasgow could provide valuable lessons for India while preparing for future international sporting events.
For the Indian contingent, the opening ceremony was certainly a proud moment, but the entire team now has only one goal — to deliver an outstanding performance in Glasgow and win as many medals as possible.
