Tokyo, 18 July (H.S.): India's star shuttler P. V. Sindhu produced another impressive performance to book her place in the final of the Japan Open 2026 on Saturday after China's world No. 4 Chen Yufei retired injured during their semifinal clash.
Sindhu was declared the winner after Chen was forced to withdraw because of a hamstring injury. At the time of her retirement, Sindhu had already won the opening game 21-19 and was leading the second game 15-10.
Strong Finish Helps Sindhu Edge Opening Game
Sindhu began the contest aggressively and established a four-point lead midway through the opening game. However, former Olympic champion Chen Yufei staged an impressive comeback to level the score at 19-19.
Despite the pressure, Sindhu maintained her composure and clinched the first game 21-19 to take a crucial advantage.
Sindhu Dominates Before Injury Ends Contest
The Indian star carried her momentum into the second game, controlling the rallies from the outset and opening up a commanding 15-10 lead. At that stage, Chen experienced discomfort due to a hamstring injury and decided to retire from the match, sending Sindhu into the final.
Sindhu Continues Impressive Resurgence
The victory extends Sindhu's remarkable run of form this season. The 31-year-old began 2026 ranked World No. 18 but has climbed back into the top 10 following a string of consistent performances and is currently ranked World No. 9.
Title Clash Awaits
In the final, Sindhu will face the winner of the second semifinal between Japan's Akane Yamaguchi and Indonesia's Putri Kusuma Wardani. The Indian ace will be aiming to capture a Super 750 title for the first time in a considerable period.
