The Central Government has appointed senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Harjit Singh Grewal as the Chairman of the National Commission for Minorities (NCM). It has also appointed S. Munavari Begum as the Vice-Chairperson and Glen E. Suze Ticklo as a Member of the Commission. Their tenure will be for three years.
The appointments were notified by the Ministry through an official notification issued on Friday.
According to the notification, the Central Government, in exercise of the powers conferred under Section 3(1) and Section 3(2), read with the relevant provisions of the National Commission for Minorities Act, 1992 (Act No. 19 of 1992), has nominated Harjit Singh Grewal as the Chairman of the National Commission for Minorities, S. Munavari Begum as the Vice-Chairperson, and Glen E. Suze Ticklo as a Member of the Commission. They will hold office for a period of three years from the date they assume charge or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
Harjit Singh Grewal is a senior BJP leader from Punjab. He previously served as Chairman of the Punjab Khadi Board. He also contested the 2017 Punjab Assembly elections and played a significant role in discussions between the Central Government's senior leadership and protesting farmers during the farmers' agitation.
