Heavy rain

Thiruvananthapuram, 12 July (H.S.):

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast light, isolated rainfall in several districts of Kerala over the next 24 hours while indicating that the state is unlikely to witness widespread heavy rain until July 15.

According to the latest weather bulletin, isolated light showers are expected in Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Kannur and Kasaragod districts. Apart from rain, gusty winds are also likely in parts of the state, prompting authorities to advise residents to remain cautious, particularly in areas prone to falling tree branches or other wind-related hazards.

The weather department said the overall rainfall activity across Kerala is expected to remain subdued during the next few days, with no major heavy rainfall events anticipated until July 15. The forecast is expected to bring temporary relief to regions that have experienced intermittent monsoon showers over the past few weeks.

Meanwhile, the IMD has issued a cautionary advisory for fishermen operating along the Kerala and Lakshadweep coasts due to the likelihood of strong winds and rough sea conditions over adjoining maritime regions.

Wind speeds of 45 to 55 kmph, gusting up to 65 kmph at times, are likely over the central-west Arabian Sea, adjoining central-east Arabian Sea, north Arabian Sea, southwest Arabian Sea, and along the Somalia and Oman coasts. Similar conditions are also expected over parts of the central-west Bay of Bengal and the south Bay of Bengal.

In addition, the central-east Bay of Bengal, adjoining central-west Bay of Bengal, north Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea are likely to experience winds of 40 to 50 kmph, with gusts reaching up to 60 kmph. The IMD warned that these conditions could lead to rough seas and reduced visibility in some areas.

Fishermen venturing into these regions have been urged to exercise extreme caution and closely monitor official weather updates before setting out to sea. Authorities have advised those already at sea to remain alert to rapidly changing weather conditions.
