New Delhi, 12 July (H.S.): President Droupadi Murmu, Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah have expressed profound grief over the demise of legendary playback singer S. Janaki, saying Indian music has lost one of its greatest icons whose extraordinary voice captivated generations of listeners.

Popularly known as the Nightingale of South India, S. Janaki passed away in Mysuru on Saturday at the age of 88 due to age-related ailments. During a remarkable career spanning more than six decades, she recorded over 48,000 songs in more than 20 languages. She also left an indelible mark on Hindi cinema with several evergreen songs, including Yaar Bina Chain Kahan Re, Gori Ka Sajan, Sajan Ki Gori, Sun Rubiya, Ghayal Ghayal Tune Mujhe Kar Diya, Nainon Mein Nindiya Hai, and Haseenon Ka Dastoor.

In her condolence message, President Droupadi Murmu said S. Janaki's timeless music would always remain a priceless treasure. She said India had lost a towering musical personality whose exceptional singing enthralled generations of music lovers. The President noted that Janaki's illustrious career spanned more than six decades, during which she recorded thousands of songs in nearly 20 Indian languages, including Hindi, Odia, Tulu, Urdu, Punjabi and Bengali.

Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan paid tribute to S. Janaki, saying her extraordinary voice enriched Indian music and touched countless hearts across generations. He said her songs transcended linguistic and regional boundaries, uniting millions through the universal language of music. Describing her passing as an irreparable loss to the music fraternity and the nation's artistic heritage, he added that she displayed equal mastery over classical, devotional and folk music, leaving an enduring imprint on every genre. He said her immense contribution to Indian music had created a legacy that would continue to inspire artists and music lovers alike.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi described S. Janaki's demise as an irreparable loss to the world of music and culture. He said her songs in several Indian languages remained popular across generations and gave expression to every emotion with unparalleled grace and versatility. The Prime Minister added that her melodious voice would continue to enchant listeners for years to come.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah said S. Janaki, blessed with a divine voice, breathed life into songs that became timeless classics in multiple languages. Calling her one of India's most revered cultural icons, he said her passing had created an irreplaceable void in the world of music.
