Murshidabad, 01 July (H.S.): Rejinagar MLA Humayun Kabir has been served notices by police from two separate police stations in connection with his controversial Satabhanga Mar remark. However, the Trinamool Congress legislator has made it clear that he will not appear before one of the police stations on the scheduled date and is unfazed by the legal action.
Speaking to the media on Wednesday, Kabir said he had received two notices. I am not going on July 3. I may go the following day. What will happen if I go to the police station? Will they arrest me? Let them. Humayun Kabir is not bothered by such things, he said.
The controversy stems from a public meeting held last Friday in Kashipur under Rejinagar, where Kabir targeted BJP leaders. He said that although the BJP had formed the government, some of its leaders in Murshidabad were behaving as if they were elected MLAs despite losing the elections. He warned that if he mobilised Muslims and started a Satabhanga Mar campaign, his opponents would have no escape. Kabir also remarked that several cases had already been registered against him, implying he was not concerned about fresh legal action.
At another public meeting in Shaktipur, Kabir escalated his rhetoric by targeting the police. Alleging that his nephew had been arrested a day before the elections, he threatened to deal with the officer-in-charge first and then his father. He also warned that he would lay siege to the police station with 10,000 supporters and force the officer out if necessary.
Reacting strongly to the remarks in the Assembly on Monday, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said, Enough is enough. It is time to teach such people a lesson. Remember, West Bengal no longer has a weak Chief Minister. Two cases have been registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and the police will take action in accordance with the law. I will visit Murshidabad within a week. In this country, the rule of law prevails, not the will of any individual.
Following the Chief Minister's statement, police arrested three organisers of the public meeting. On Tuesday morning, officers also visited Kabir's residence and served him notices in both cases.
Despite the legal proceedings, Kabir remains defiant. He said that if he was sent to jail, he would launch a Jail Bharo movement and challenge the administration to take whatever action it deemed fit.
