Shillong, 05 June (HS): Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda participated in a tree plantation programme along with party leaders and workers in Meghalaya’s capital Shillong on Friday to mark World Environment Day. On the occasion, he said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” campaign has now evolved into a nationwide movement.

Addressing BJP workers after planting saplings, Nadda said the initiative, launched by Prime Minister Modi on June 5, 2024, aims to promote environmental conservation through public participation and a sense of collective responsibility. He noted that the campaign has inspired people across the country to contribute towards a greener and more sustainable future.

Highlighting the scale of the programme, the Union Minister said that lakhs of BJP workers across India were planting saplings on World Environment Day as part of the national campaign. He added that the initiative is dedicated to honouring the selfless love, care and sacrifices of mothers.

Drawing a parallel between mothers and nature, Nadda said that just as a mother nurtures and protects her children throughout her life, nature also sustains and safeguards humanity. Therefore, protecting the environment is a shared responsibility of every citizen.

“Just as a mother selflessly cares for her children throughout her life, nature nourishes and protects humankind. Conserving the environment is essential for the welfare of both present and future generations,” he said.

The Union Minister further stated that the campaign has expanded steadily since its launch. Beginning in 2024 and witnessing significant growth in 2025, the initiative has transformed into a mass national movement in 2026. According to him, crores of BJP workers and supporters across the country are now actively participating in tree plantation drives and other environmental conservation activities.-----------
