New Delhi, 04 June (H.S.):
Domestic equity markets closed with marginal gains on Wednesday, supported by value buying at lower levels, after a volatile trading session that saw both declines and recovery during the day.
The trading session began on a weak note, with selling pressure intensifying soon after the opening bell, pushing both the Sensex and Nifty into deeper losses. However, buying interest emerged at lower levels within the first hour of trade, leading to a recovery that brought both indices into positive territory by around 10 a.m.
After the early rebound, the market witnessed a tug-of-war between buyers and sellers throughout the day, resulting in range-bound and volatile movement. By the end of the session, the Sensex edged higher by 0.02 percent, while the Nifty gained 0.05 percent.
Sectorally, consumer durables, capital goods, and automobile stocks saw sustained buying interest. Pharmaceutical, banking, energy, FMCG, oil and gas, and public sector enterprise indices also closed in positive territory. In contrast, IT and metal stocks remained under pressure throughout the session.
In broader markets, buying activity remained strong, with the Nifty Midcap index rising 0.46 percent and the Smallcap index advancing 0.58 percent.
The overall market strength led to a sharp increase in investor wealth, with the total market capitalization of BSE-listed companies rising to approximately ₹462.16 lakh crore (provisional), compared to ₹460.43 lakh crore in the previous session. This resulted in investor gains of about ₹1.73 lakh crore in a single trading day.
A total of 4,361 stocks were actively traded on the BSE, of which 2,244 advanced, 1,940 declined, and 177 remained unchanged. On the NSE, 2,995 stocks were traded, with 1,608 advancing and 1,387 declining. In the Sensex pack, 12 stocks closed higher while 18 ended in the red. In the Nifty 50 index, 23 stocks gained and 27 declined.
The BSE Sensex opened 410.34 points lower at 73,935.83. It extended losses shortly after opening, falling 538.87 points to touch 73,807.30. Buying at lower levels, however, triggered a sharp recovery, pushing the index up by 736.94 points from the day’s low to reach 74,544.24 by around 10:30 a.m.
Thereafter, the index fluctuated within a narrow range before finally closing with a marginal gain of 13.84 points at 74,360.01.
Similarly, the NSE Nifty opened lower at 23,282.45, down 123.15 points. It further slipped to 23,247.30 before recovering steadily on buying support. The index later rose to an intraday high of 23,465.30 before ending the session at 23,416.55, up 10.95 points.
Among major gainers in the Sensex pack were Titan Company (up 3.48 percent), Eternal (up 2.98 percent), Coal India (up 1.98 percent), Cipla (up 1.71 percent), and Adani Enterprises (up 1.61 percent).
