New Delhi, 30 June (H.S.): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday extended greetings to the nation on the occasion of Hul Diwas and paid tribute to tribal freedom fighters, including Sidho-Kanho, Chand-Bhairav, and Phulo-Jhano. He said Hul Diwas is a powerful symbol of the extraordinary courage and spirit of sacrifice displayed by the tribal community in defence of the motherland.

In a post on social media platform X, the Prime Minister said Hul Diwas represents the indomitable resolve of the tribal community, whose members laid down their lives for the nation.

He said that on this proud occasion in India's history, he pays his respectful tribute to all the brave tribal heroes and heroines, including Sidho Murmu, Kanho Murmu, Chand Murmu, Bhairav Murmu, and the valiant sisters Phulo and Jhano, who fought fearlessly against the injustices of foreign rule.

The Prime Minister said the story of their struggle and sacrifice to safeguard the dignity and honour of the tribal community would continue to inspire and energise the people of the country.

Notably, Hul Diwas is observed every year on June 30 to commemorate the Santhal Hul (Rebellion) of 1855. The historic uprising began at Bhognadih, in present-day Sahibganj district of Jharkhand, under the leadership of Sidho Murmu and Kanho Murmu. Chand Murmu, Bhairav Murmu, and the courageous sisters Phulo and Jhano also played significant roles in the movement. The rebellion is regarded as one of the largest organised tribal uprisings against British colonial rule, the zamindari system, and the exploitation by moneylenders.
