New Delhi, 30 June (H.S.): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday accused opposition parties of adopting double standards after 23 opposition parties jointly wrote to the Chief Justice of India expressing concerns over the Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and other election-related issues.

Speaking to the media, BJP National Spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla said the opposition was opposing the SIR process at the national level even as a similar exercise had been initiated in Karnataka. He described the opposition's position as an example of extreme hypocrisy.

Poonawalla alleged that opposition parties raise no objections to the SIR process or Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) when they win elections, but question the same institutions and procedures after electoral defeats.

Taking a swipe at the opposition, he said, For the opposition, SIR is merely an excuse; the real objective is to protect themselves.

The BJP spokesperson further alleged that opposition parties were attempting to divert attention from their political failures by casting doubts on democratic institutions and established electoral processes.

Notably, 23 opposition parties and one Independent Member of Parliament have jointly written to the Chief Justice of India expressing concerns over the Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process and other election-related issues. The letter has also been signed by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), a move widely seen as a display of opposition unity.

Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh said in a post on X that the joint representation now carries the signatures of 23 political parties and one Independent MP.
