Guwahati, 03 June (HS): Priyada Gogoi, mother of Sivasagar MLA and Raijor Dal President Akhil Gogoi, passed away on Wednesday morning in Guwahati after a prolonged age-related illness. She was 96.
According to family sources, Priyada Gogoi had been undergoing treatment for health complications associated with old age and breathed her last in the morning. Her demise has triggered an outpouring of condolences from political leaders, supporters and well-wishers across Assam.
Akhil Gogoi was by his mother’s side during her final moments and described the loss as a deeply personal tragedy. The veteran legislator, known for his vocal stand on public issues and opposition politics in the state, was visibly emotional following her passing.
Her mortal remains are being taken to Selenghat near Moriani in Jorhat district, where the last rites will be performed in the presence of family members, relatives and supporters.
Priyada Gogoi had played a significant role in her son’s political journey, particularly during the 2021 Assam Assembly elections when Akhil Gogoi contested from Sivasagar as an independent candidate while being lodged in jail in connection with anti-CAA protests. Despite her advanced age, she actively campaigned for him, reportedly reaching out to voters and appealing for support.
She had also publicly demanded her son’s release from jail and her efforts were widely credited with helping mobilise support for his campaign. Akhil Gogoi went on to register a historic victory from Sivasagar and later emerged as a prominent voice in the Assam Legislative Assembly.
Leaders from across the political spectrum have expressed grief over her demise and extended their condolences to the bereaved family.------------
