
Hooghly, 27 June (H.S.): Panic gripped Natun Gram in Ward No. 20 of the Rishra Municipality in Hooghly district on Saturday morning after a 32-year-old woman was found murdered with her throat slit inside her rented residence.
The deceased has been identified as Monika Ojha (32). She lived in the rented house with her young daughter.
According to the police and local sources, the victim's mother arrived at the house around 9 a.m. and found Monika lying in a pool of blood inside the room. She immediately alerted neighbours, following which the incident was reported to the police. The gruesome murder drew a large number of local residents to the spot.
On information, Rishra Police Station Officer-in-Charge Sanjay Sarkar rushed to the scene along with a police team. Later, Serampore Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Arnab Biswas also visited the spot to supervise the investigation.
Local residents claimed that Monika's husband, Dipankar Sarkar, had returned home from outside on Friday. However, he has been missing since Saturday morning following the incident. Police have launched a search to trace him.
Speaking to reporters, DCP Arnab Biswas said that the case is being treated as a murder. He added that investigators are examining all possible angles and efforts are underway to locate the absconding husband.
Local sources also made various claims regarding the victim's marital life. However, the police have not officially confirmed those claims and said no conclusions would be drawn until the investigation is completed.
The body has been sent for post-mortem examination, and further investigation is in progress.
