Chennai , 27 June (H.S.): The Tamil film industry lost one of its most celebrated creative minds on Saturday with the passing of veteran actor, director and screenwriter K. Bhagyaraj, who died after suffering a cardiac arrest in Chennai. He was 73. Leaders cutting across political lines and members of the film fraternity paid rich tributes, remembering him as a visionary filmmaker whose contribution transformed Tamil cinema.

Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar expressed profound grief over Bhagyaraj's demise, saying his remarkable body of work would continue to inspire generations of filmmakers and cinema lovers. Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay described the veteran filmmaker's death as an irreparable loss to the State's cultural and artistic landscape and conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.

According to reports, Bhagyaraj was admitted to a private hospital after suffering a cardiac arrest but passed away despite the best efforts of doctors. He had been active until recently and had attended the wedding celebrations of filmmaker Sundar C. and actor Khushbu Sundar's daughter, Avantika Sundar, in Goa a few days earlier. His funeral is scheduled to take place at Besant Nagar in Chennai.

Born as Krishnasamy Bhagyaraj on January 7, 1953, in Vellankovil near Gobichettipalayam in Erode district, he entered the film industry as an assistant director to acclaimed filmmaker Bharathiraja. He soon carved a niche for himself with his exceptional writing and went on to become one of Tamil cinema's most successful writer-directors.

Beginning with his directorial debut, Suvarillatha Chithirangal (1979), Bhagyaraj delivered several memorable films noted for their engaging screenplays, humour, emotional depth and strong family values. His works, including Andha 7 Naatkal, Mundhanai Mudichu, Dhavani Kanavugal and Chinna Veedu, remain milestones in Tamil cinema.

Besides directing, Bhagyaraj enjoyed a successful career as an actor and screenwriter, earning numerous honours, including Filmfare Awards and Tamil Nadu State Film Awards. Condolences also poured in from Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, Bharathiraja, Sathyaraj, Khushbu Sundar, Sundar C., Raghava Lawrence and several other film personalities, who hailed him as a master storyteller and an institution in screenplay writing.

Bhagyaraj is survived by his wife, actor Poornima Bhagyaraj, son Shanthanu and daughter Saranya. His enduring legacy will continue to influence generations of filmmakers and remain an integral part of Tamil cinema's rich history.
