New Delhi, 27 June (H.S.): The first commercial consignment of the Geographical Indication (GI)-tagged Rewa Sundarja mango from Madhya Pradesh has been exported to the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) facilitated the export, marking a significant milestone for the internationally renowned mango variety.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry said that one metric tonne of premium-quality GI-tagged Rewa Sundarja mangoes had been exported to the UAE, marking the commencement of commercial exports of the variety to the Gulf nation.
The ministry said that the first commercial consignment of one metric tonne of the renowned GI-tagged Rewa Sundarja mangoes was dispatched to the UAE on June 26 through M/s Salt Range Foods Private Limited. The shipment marks the beginning of the international journey of the Rewa Sundarja mango and is expected to pave the way for regular exports in the coming seasons.
According to the ministry, the commercial export is expected to provide significant economic benefits to mango growers in the Rewa region. While the current market price of Rewa Sundarja mangoes in local markets ranges between Rs 100 and Rs 110 per kilogram, the exporter purchased the produce at Rs 150 per kilogram. The additional earnings of Rs 40 to Rs 50 per kilogram will directly benefit farmers, highlighting the economic advantages of integrating producers into export-oriented value chains.
The ministry stated that the initiative will provide Rewa's mango growers with access to international markets, enhancing their income while giving India's distinctive agricultural products greater recognition globally. It added that the export represents an important step towards promoting India's unique agricultural produce in the global marketplace.
The ministry further said that the successful shipment underscores the importance of Geographical Indication (GI) registration in establishing a distinct identity for region-specific agricultural products in international markets and strengthening India's agricultural exports.
