Guwahati, 26 June (HS): Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday paid heartfelt tribute to eminent patriot and visionary litterateur Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay on his birth anniversary, describing him as a towering figure whose literary works ignited the spirit of nationalism during British colonial rule.

In a social media post, the Chief Minister said Bankim Chandra transformed his writings into a powerful force for national awakening at a time when India was under colonial oppression. He noted that the iconic composition 'Vande Mataram' became a symbol of patriotism, self-respect and the country's freedom movement, inspiring millions of Indians across regions, languages and communities.

Sarma also highlighted the enduring impact of Bankim Chandra's novel 'Anandamath', saying it presented the exalted image of Mother India and inspired generations with the ideals of independence, national pride and unity.
