Chandigarh, 25 June (H.S.): Police detained Youth Congress workers from

Sector 18 in Chandigarh today while they were protesting against Union

Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The protesters were raising slogans

demanding the resignation of the Education Minister.

According to information, Dharmendra Pradhan had reached

Tagore Theatre in Sector 18 to attend a programme organised against the

Emergency imposed in the country on June 25, 1975. The BJP is holding similar

programmes in different parts of the country to mark the day.

Meanwhile, Youth Congress workers gathered to protest

against the Union Minister over the recent NEET paper leak controversy. They

shouted slogans such as “Education Minister resign” and tried to move towards

the programme venue. When police attempted to stop them, a heated argument

broke out between the workers and police personnel.

As the protesters refused to disperse, police detained

them and took them away from the spot. Heavy police deployment was seen in and

around the area to prevent any law-and-order situation.

Youth Congress workers said their protest was being

stopped by the police. They alleged that the government was not serious about

the future of students affected by the NEET issue. The workers said their fight

would continue and the Congress party would keep raising its voice on the

matter.

The protest had been planned in advance by the Youth

Congress. Workers had been asked to gather in Sector 19 before moving towards

the venue. However, police detained several of them from the area before they

could proceed further.

The protesters said that students across the country were worried about the

alleged irregularities in the NEET examination and demanded accountability from

the Union Education Ministry.
