Mumbai, 23 June (HS): The Maharashtra administration is 100%
committed to adopting the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state, Minister of
State for Home Yogesh Kadam informed the legislative assembly on Tuesday. He
stated that a team led by a former HC judge had already been created to develop
the draft law.
The problem arose during a calling attention motion introduced by BJP MLA
Devyani Farande on situations of Muslim women suffering triple talaq. The
conversation was boisterous and interrupted several times, with members
participating in heated discussions about triple talaq and polygamy. Farande
stated that three Muslim ladies had sought her for assistance in the preceding
one and a half months. Police filed cases against the defendants, but women
have yet to obtain complete justice. One lady was threatened to circulate
indecent recordings, while the spouse of another woman attempted to harm her,
she said.
In response, Kadam stated that similar concerns were not
confined to Nashik but had been reported throughout Maharashtra. He stated that
42 of such complaints received in 2024 were real. (Legal) Action was taken
against 137 suspects. 95 persons were arrested in 2025.
On the proposed law, he stated that a committee, led by a former High Court
judge, has already been formed to prepare a draft of the Uniform Civil Code
bill. The committee is working on it. Referring to Uttarakhand's legislation,
he stated that it entirely barred polygamy and provided for up to seven years
imprisonment. NCP MLA Sana Malik stated that crimes against women should not be
seen just through the lens of religion, and she questioned if such occurrences
primarily occurred among Muslim women.
