KYIV/MINSK, 21 June (H.S.):
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has warned Belarus that Ukraine may consider military action if Minsk does not remove its air defence radar systems and related military equipment deployed along the southern border within one week.
According to Russia's state-controlled international television network RT, speaking at a press conference in Kyiv, Zelensky said Belarus should remove its air defence systems and relay transmitters from the border area to demonstrate its peaceful intentions. He said one week was sufficient time for Minsk to comply, adding that if Belarus failed to do so, Ukraine would take action on its own.
The statement comes amid heightened regional tensions following a recent drone attack on a bus carrying a children's football team in Russia's Bryansk region. Several children were injured in the incident, while one woman was killed. Belarus condemned the attack, describing it as a provocative act. Ukraine, however, has denied any involvement in the incident.
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko recently stated that his country has no intention of becoming involved in any military conflict and does not pose a threat to any neighbouring state. He also warned that any attempt to draw Belarus into the conflict could lead to serious consequences.
During the press conference, Zelensky also referred to Belarus's oil refining industry and suggested that pressure could be exerted on its energy cooperation with Russia. He claimed that Belarus is among the major suppliers of petroleum products to Russia.
Notably, since the Russia-Ukraine conflict began in 2022, Belarus has avoided direct military participation in the war. Minsk has consistently called for dialogue and a diplomatic resolution between the two sides. In recent years, Belarus has also undertaken several humanitarian and mediation initiatives, including efforts to facilitate the release of Ukrainian civilians and offering to host potential peace negotiations.
