Guwahati, 17 June (HS): Assam Health Minister Ashok Singhal on Wednesday carried out an extensive review of healthcare services and infrastructure at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), stressing the government's commitment to building a healthier Assam through improved medical care and patient services.

During the visit, the minister inspected key facilities including the Out-Patient Department (OPD), Super Speciality Hospital and Mother and Child Hospital. He also reviewed the functioning of an advanced CTG machine used for monitoring the health of pregnant women and unborn children. Singhal interacted with patients and their family members to gather feedback on treatment, available facilities, and the overall hospital environment.

A detailed review meeting was later held with heads of departments, senior doctors and administrative officials. Discussions focused on patient load, healthcare delivery, medical education standards, available facilities and ongoing infrastructure development. Various measures aimed at enhancing the quality and efficiency of healthcare services were also deliberated upon.

Addressing doctors and healthcare professionals, the minister urged them to place public service at the heart of their work. He said the medical profession is not merely a career but a vital avenue for serving humanity and emphasised the need for compassion, responsibility and dedication in patient care.

Singhal further noted that GMCH serves as a major healthcare lifeline not only for Assam but for the entire Northeast. He reiterated the government's commitment to strengthening the institution through modern infrastructure, advanced medical facilities and citizen-centric healthcare services.

Senior officials, including Health and Family Welfare Commissioner and Secretary Dr. P. Ashok Babu, Medical Education and Research Commissioner and Secretary Dr. Siddharth Singh, GMCH Principal-cum-Chief Superintendent Dr. Achyut Kumar Baishya, Director of Medical Education Dr. Manoj Kumar Choudhury and GMCH Superintendent Dr. Debajit Choudhury, were present during the review programme.-----------
