Bhubaneswar, 14 June (H.S.): The festival of Raja commenced across Odisha on Sunday with the celebration of Pahili Raja, marking the onset of the monsoon season and the beginning of the Odia month of Ashadha. The three-day festival is observed as a tribute to Mother Earth and Odisha’s deep-rooted agrarian traditions.
A festive atmosphere prevailed across both urban and rural parts of the state, with people of all age groups participating in the celebrations. The festival is particularly significant for young women and children, who actively engage in various traditional customs and cultural activities.
The day began with young girls taking ceremonial baths and adorning themselves in new attire. As part of the festivities, many applied alta on their feet and mehendi on their hands, symbolising joy and celebration.
In villages, traditional Raja swings were hung from trees, becoming gathering spots for girls who enjoyed swinging while singing age-old Raja songs. Boys and young men participated in recreational activities, including card games, Ludo, and the traditional game of Bagudi.
Food remains an integral part of Raja celebrations. Households across the state prepared an array of traditional delicacies, with the iconic Poda Pitha taking centre stage. Other festive favourites included Chakuli Pitha, Manda Pitha, and Arisa Pitha, accompanied by specially prepared Raja Paan infused with sweetened spices.
