Kochi, 14 June (H.S.):Concern is mounting in Ernakulam district after two more deaths linked to H1N1 influenza (swine flu) were confirmed, taking the number of fatalities from the disease this month to three. Health authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and seek timely medical attention if symptoms develop.

The deceased have been identified as Omana (61), a resident of Kadavanthra, and Seyth Mohammed (75) from Neriamangalam. Both died on June 10. Earlier, another H1N1-related death was reported in the district on June 3.

According to data from the Health Department, as many as 753 people sought treatment for fever-related illnesses in Ernakulam on Friday alone, while 16 patients required hospitalisation. In view of the reported H1N1 cases, District Medical Officer Dr. N.K. Kuttappan has advised residents to strictly follow preventive measures and remain alert to symptoms.

H1N1 is a viral respiratory infection that spreads through the air, primarily via droplets expelled when infected individuals cough or sneeze. Common symptoms include fever, cold, cough, sore throat and breathing difficulties. Health experts stress that early diagnosis and treatment can prevent complications and significantly improve outcomes.

Pregnant women, senior citizens, young children and people with underlying health conditions are considered particularly vulnerable to severe illness. Officials warned that ignoring symptoms or delaying treatment could lead to critical complications and, in some cases, death.

The Health Department has advised people to consume nutritious food, drink plenty of fluids and take adequate rest. The use of masks has been recommended in hospitals and crowded public places. Residents have also been urged to maintain hand hygiene by washing hands frequently with soap or using sanitisers and to avoid touching the eyes, nose and mouth with unclean hands.

People exhibiting flu-like symptoms should avoid public gatherings and minimise contact with others. Parents have been advised not to send children with fever to schools or anganwadis.

Health officials further cautioned against self-medication and advised the public to take medicines, including antibiotics, only on a doctor’s prescription.
