Visakhapatnam, 13 June (HS): The death toll in the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant mishap rose to 10 after an injured worker succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment at a private hospital, officials said on Saturday.

The deceased was identified as Suri Babu, who had sustained severe injuries in the accident that occurred at the Steel Melt Shop-1 of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant on June 8.

According to officials, the mishap took place during casting operations involving molten steel. Several workers sustained burn injuries in the incident and were admitted to hospitals for treatment.

With the death of Suri Babu, the number of fatalities in the accident has increased to 10.

The Visakhapatnam Steel Plant management has been extending medical assistance to the injured workers and monitoring their treatment, officials said.

The incident had triggered concern among employees and labour organisations, which sought a detailed inquiry into the circumstances leading to the accident and measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Authorities are continuing investigations into the cause of the mishap.
