Kolkata, 13 June (H.S.): Amid heightened political tensions in Haldia of Purba Medinipur district, an unusual display of political courtesy was witnessed on Friday night when BJP MLA Subhas Chandra Panja arranged transportation for members of the ruling Trinamool Congress who were reportedly unable to leave a Panchayat Samiti office due to a protest outside.
According to sources, Haldia Panchayat Samiti Chairperson Moumita Ghorai, Vice-Chairperson Srikanta Maity and several other members had arrived at the Panchayat Samiti office on Friday. During their visit, a group of agitated individuals gathered outside the premises and staged a protest, allegedly carrying eggs as part of their demonstration.
With tensions prevailing outside the office, the Trinamool Congress members remained inside the building until late in the evening, reportedly reluctant to venture out amid fears of confrontation.
After learning about the situation, Mahishadal MLA Subhas Chandra Panja stepped in and arranged for his vehicle to transport the Trinamool members safely to their homes.
Speaking on the matter, the BJP legislator said he had received information that the members were unable to leave the office due to security concerns and apprehension over the protest. He added that he considered it his responsibility to ensure their safe return and therefore arranged transportation for them.
The incident has drawn attention for reflecting a rare instance of cooperation and civility between political rivals amid an otherwise charged political atmosphere in the district.
Notably, in the 2023 Panchayat elections, the Haldia Panchayat Samiti's 12-member board was won by the Trinamool Congress, which secured seven seats, while the BJP won five. The Trinamool subsequently formed the board and has since retained control of the local body.
