
Jammu, 12 June (H.S.): Seasonal employees of the Mechanical Irrigation Division Baramulla, Sub-Division Handwara, today staged a sit-in protest, demanding 12-month employment, job security, and an end to what they termed as seasonal exploitation.
The protesting employees assembled at the Sub-Division level and raised slogans in support of their long-pending demands. Holding placards bearing messages such as Feed Us All Year, 12 Months of Employment Now, and We Want Justice, the workers highlighted their contribution towards maintaining irrigation infrastructure and ensuring uninterrupted services to the farming community.
The employees stated that their services are utilized throughout the year for the operation and maintenance of irrigation schemes, yet they continue to be engaged on a seasonal basis.
They urged the Government and concerned authorities to recognize their contribution and provide year-round employment.
The protesters demanded regular employment, job security, fair treatment, respect for labour rights, and an immediate end to seasonal exploitation. They maintained that irrigation workers play a crucial role in supporting agriculture and deserve dignified and stable employment.
The seasonal employees appealed to the Lieutenant Governor-led administration and the concerned department to address their genuine grievances and fulfil their long-pending demand for 12-month employment.
The protest concluded peacefully, with the employees reiterating their commitment to continue their democratic struggle until their demands are met.
