Kolkata, 01 June (H.S.) : West Bengal witnessed an inspiring story of perseverance and social mobility on Monday as Kalita Majhi, the MLA from Ausgram in Purba Bardhaman district, took oath as a Minister of State in the newly expanded state cabinet. Once employed as a domestic worker to support her family, Majhi has now become a member of the state government, marking a remarkable rise in public life.
A resident of Guskara, Kalita Majhi’s life has been shaped by years of economic hardship and determination. With limited family income, she worked in several households as a domestic helper to supplement the earnings of her husband, who works in machine repair. Despite financial challenges, she remained committed to providing a better future for her only son, Partha, who appeared for the Higher Secondary examination this year.
Driven by a desire to work for the poor and marginalized sections of society, Majhi entered active politics around seven years ago by joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). In the 2021 Assembly elections, she was fielded by the party from the Ausgram constituency but lost to Trinamool Congress candidate Abhedananda Thander by 11,815 votes.
Undeterred by the defeat, Majhi continued to remain active in public life, strengthening her grassroots connect and expanding the party’s organizational presence in the constituency. Recognizing her sustained efforts and popularity among voters, the BJP once again nominated her from Ausgram in the 2026 Assembly elections. This time, her extensive outreach and ground-level engagement paid off, helping her secure victory and a seat in the state Assembly.
Majhi was among the 35 new members inducted into Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari’s Council of Ministers during the cabinet expansion ceremony held at Lok Bhavan on Monday. She has been entrusted with the responsibility of Minister of State.
Speaking after taking the oath, Majhi said she comes from a poor family and understands the difficulties faced by ordinary people. She emphasized that despite becoming an MLA and now a minister, she intends to remain connected to the common people and prioritize the development and welfare of Ausgram’s residents.
Her elevation has been widely celebrated in Guskara and surrounding areas. Families for whom she once worked as a domestic helper also expressed pride in her achievement. Members of the Patra family, where Majhi had worked since 2011, recalled her dedication and humility, describing her as a member of their own family. Platilal Patra said her rise to the state cabinet is a matter of pride for the entire region.
Significantly, this is the first time in the history of the Ausgram Assembly constituency that one of its representatives has been inducted into the state Council of Ministers. Kalita Majhi’s journey as a powerful example of how perseverance, hard work, and grassroots engagement can transform lives and create new opportunities in public service.
