Guwahati, 04 May (HS): The trends of the Assam Assembly Elections 2026 began translating into clear victories on Monday, with the BJP-led alliance securing key wins across the state. In a significant upset, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president and Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi was defeated from the Jorhat Assembly constituency by BJP candidate Hitendra Nath Goswami.

In the 100-number Jorhat constituency, counting was completed in all 14 rounds. Goswami, a former Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly and a legal professional, secured 69,439 votes, defeating Gogoi, who polled 46,257 votes, by a margin of 23,182 votes. A total of 1,319 votes were recorded under NOTA. The victory marks a major political setback for the Congress in the state.

In Dhemaji constituency, Assam minister and BJP leader Ranoj Pegu registered a decisive victory over Congress candidate Sailen Sonowal. Pegu secured 83,649 votes, while Sonowal received 51,420 votes, resulting in a winning margin of 32,229 votes. NOTA accounted for 1,197 votes in the constituency, where counting was held in 17 rounds.

Meanwhile, in the Majbat Assembly constituency, Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) candidate Charan Bodo, part of the BJP-led alliance, also emerged victorious. Bodo secured 84,718 votes and defeated Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) candidate Preeti Rekha Barla by a margin of 55,546 votes, further strengthening the alliance’s position in the ongoing election process.
