New Delhi, May 26 (H.S.): Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari on Tuesday said that the 14.9-kilometre four-lane Thiruvarur Bypass construction project on the Nagapattinam–Thanjavur section of National Highway-83 in Tamil Nadu has been approved. The project will cost ₹1,427.61 crore.
In a post on the social media platform X, Gadkari stated that the project also includes the construction of two additional railway overbridges (ROBs) on NH-129A and NH-134A.
He said the strategic project will improve connectivity between major industrial hubs such as Tiruchirappalli and Coimbatore with port cities like Karaikal and Nagapattinam, thereby boosting regional economic activity.
According to the Minister, the bypass will originate from Adiyakkamangalam–Thandalai and pass through several key locations, including Athipuliyur, Andipalayam, Kidarankondan, Pallivaramangalam, Perumpugalur, Ilavangarkudi, and Anaivadapathi Colony.
He added that once completed, the project will significantly reduce traffic congestion in Thiruvarur city, cut travel time by around 15 minutes, and improve road safety by diverting traffic away from densely populated and commercial areas.
Gadkari further noted that the new route will enhance connectivity with State Highway-23 and State Highway-65, as well as the renowned Thyagaraja Swamy Temple, thereby supporting infrastructure development and improving ease of travel in the region.
