New Delhi, May 26 (H.S.): The Central Government has introduced key modifications to the PM-WANI framework, incorporating QR-based login for laptops and other devices, flexible short-duration plans of 15, 30, and 60 minutes, along with standardization of PM-WANI hotspot names.

The Ministry of Communications, through circulars issued on May 22, has rolled out these reforms. All stakeholders have been directed to implement the revised guidelines within eight weeks, ensuring that the new citizen-centric features are operational across the ecosystem by July.

The Ministry stated that the objective of these reforms is to enhance accessibility, interoperability, ease of use, and overall citizen adoption of the public Wi-Fi network.

Minister of State for Communications and Rural Development, Dr. Chandrasekhar Pemmasani, recently held detailed review meetings with departmental officials and stakeholders to accelerate implementation and improve user experience.

Dr. Pemmasani said that PM-WANI serves as a platform for universal public Wi-Fi access and is being made even more user-friendly. With the introduction of QR-based login, laptops can now be connected simply by scanning a code on a mobile device. Hotspot operators have also been advised to offer short-duration access plans of 15, 30, and 60 minutes, catering to users who require internet for brief periods.

He further noted that in today’s digital era, public Wi-Fi is emerging as an essential utility, supporting students, travelers, daily commuters, professionals, and small businesses alike.
