Thiruvananthapuram, 26 May (H.S.): With the southwest monsoon expected to make its onset over Kerala within the next few days, the state is likely to continue receiving widespread rainfall and thundershowers on Tuesday, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The weather agency has issued a yellow alert for four districts and warned of heavy rain, thunderstorms and strong winds in several regions.
The yellow alert has been sounded for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha and Ernakulam districts on Tuesday, indicating the possibility of isolated heavy rainfall. Among these, Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam and Alappuzha will continue under yellow alert on Wednesday as well. As of now, no district-level alerts have been issued for Thursday and Friday.
The IMD has also issued a broader warning for Kerala and Lakshadweep, cautioning residents about thunderstorms and heavy rainfall over Tuesday and Wednesday. Thunderstorm activity is expected to persist through Thursday and Friday, while heavy rainfall warnings have also been issued for Saturday and Sunday. Additionally, fishermen have been advised to exercise caution and follow weather updates closely before venturing into the sea.
Authorities have warned the public about potential disruptions caused by intense rainfall and gusty winds. Heavy rain could lead to poor visibility, traffic congestion and waterlogging in low-lying areas. Strong winds accompanying thunderstorms may uproot trees, break branches and damage power lines, resulting in disruptions to transportation and electricity supply.
The IMD has also expressed concern over possible damage to standing crops, particularly those nearing harvest. Vulnerable hilly regions may face the risk of landslides, while lightning poses an additional threat in open areas.
Residents have been advised to avoid weak structures, stay indoors during thunderstorms, follow traffic advisories and seek safe shelter when lightning occurs.
Although the IMD had earlier forecast the arrival of the southwest monsoon in Kerala by Tuesday, it had also indicated a possible variation of three to four days. Meteorological conditions, however, remain favourable for the further advance of the monsoon across the Arabian Sea and adjoining regions over the next few days.
